Fraction distillation of air

Oxygen, nitrogen and noble gases in the air can be separated by fractional distillation of liquid air. This is because these gases can be distilled out at their different boiling points.

The first stage of fractional distillation of air is as follows:

There will be a repeated compression and expansion of air to bring down the ntemperature of air. As a result, nitrogen and oxygen will be turned into liquid. CO2 & H2O will become solid which are removed by filtration.

The second stage of fractional distillation is :

Fractional distllation of liquefied air to separate nitrogen, argon and oxygen
